I've converted all my in-house machines to Macs and there is just no reason to hack at this. I may write an article on the process later. I predict that the issue you had was that one of the packages had changed from ubuntu 7.04 and ubuntu 7.10, so I would be interested to know if you had to change any of the package names when doing the apt-get.
