OpenDNS Finally Configured

opendnslogo.png

Finally got around to spending 5 minutes configuring my home network to use OpenDNS. I figured that it is just one more layer of protection I can give my network. OpenDNS gives you the ability to perform internet filtering and gives you an additional layer of protection from phishing sites for free. It’s simply amazing that just a few years ago we used to pay for some major hardware/software solutions that provided the same level of protection. I know of quite a few companies that are still paying for subscription services for the something they could get for free now.

Ecto 3 – Windows Live Writer Killer (for me)

Picture 1.png

Disregard my last post about Back in the Saddle with Live Writer — I’ve found Nirvana in Ecto v3 for the Mac. No longer will I have that icky feeling firing up a Windows VM to run a blog editor. Now I can concentrate on just producing content and not worry about interoperability or resource consumption. I think I’m going to cry.

Netflix Woes

I’ve been meaning to post this article for awhile, but RL got in the way.  In any event, after performing my 10.5.6 upgrade I was very happy that, once again, I had a fully functional Hackintosh.

And then I broke it.

As some of you may be aware, that Netflix now supports Macs in their movie streaming service.  Since every workstation in the house is a Mac of one variety or another, I thought that joining Netflix to stream, albeit older, movies would be pretty cool.

Little did I know, this would lead me to a small tour of Hotel Grief …

Magic Number Machine

Lifehacker just posted a quick entry regarding Magic Number Machine.  I’ve been using this tool since I got my Mac – it’s simply amazing.  Magic Number Machine is an extremely powerful graphic calculator.  It does everything but sit up and beg.  The tool has come in very handy when I’m double-checking the kid’s homework — it’s been a long time since Algebra for me.  This takes all the grunt work out of the problems.

It’s Mac only and can be found here.

WordPress for iPhone – Part II

wordpresslogo A few posts ago I mentioned that I had installed the new WordPress for iPhone application on my iPhone.  I had only posted that one entry from the application since then (only because I was on vacation and got totally engrossed in a couple of books so no time for blogging.)  I did start another blog entry with the application but saved it as draft instead of posting it.  Since then I’ve had a little more time to look the application so I thought I would put an entry on the blog about it.
