Now that I've pretty much ended my quest for a great calendaring solution for the family, I've turn my attention to sharing our media. Like a lot of families, I have a ton of music, pictures, and video scattered acrossed a number of machines. I've corralled a lot of this data to one SAMBA share on my Ubuntu server. This is good - as now I have one central place for all data that my family can now avoid on purpose. "What server?", "uh, where can I find that movie/song/pic?", etc. No matter, I will win them over soon (well... eventually.)

In any event, my wife asked me last night to put some new songs on her iPhone as all she has is older music - her musice dated back to circa 2009. Biting back the first sarcastic comment that came to mind ("You can find it on the server.."), I said sure. This little exercise was going to eat through my evening. Just because everything is in one location, everyone has their own iTunes database and none of them are up to date with the contents of collection. I thought I would have to blow away her iTunes database and import everything in the library again, or I would have to at least manually add every new song. However, I found a neat little procedure that save a ton of time and thought I would share it.

If you've played with one of these netbooks or have one, you'll know that the quote/apostrophe key is located in the wrong spot when compared to normal US keyboards.

...In the picture below, you'll see I named my Swapped. Not only will this allow you to switch between different keyboard types, this also will put another icon on the already tight Menu bar. Continue reading →

Recently I changed from FIOS back to Cablevision and I found myself in a position of not having a modern wireless router. Yeah, I realized that as soon as I had order the re-installation of cable only 5 days before the install. FIOS had come with it's own cable modem with built-in wireless router. Cablevision requires that you get your own. I had given my Apple Extreme Base Station to my Dad as I thought that I didn't need it any more. I thought I had to go out and buy a new modem. I'm jonesing for the NETGEAR WNDR3700-100NAS that just came out - At $180+ I think I'll wait awhile for the price to come down.

Wow.. I just upgraded my Dell Mini 9 to OS X 10.5.8 and I'm just completely overjoyed on how uneventful the upgrade went. Almost not worth writing a blog entry about it. I made a backup of my DellEFI v1.2 alpha 5 application, upgraded to 10.5.8 via Software update, re-installed the DellEFI, reboot. Done.

Although it seems like a lot of people have starting doubting the usefulness of these netbooks, I can tell you I get a lot of mileage out of mine yet. It now has a permanent home in my Go-Bag.

Ahhh... kids.... such bliss. What could be better? Kids and laptops...One of the kid's laptop LCD screen was damage - magically, of course. The screen had two very serious cracks which rendered the device pretty much useless. However, that didn't stop them from using it anyway.. In any event, this is a quick article to point out a couple of really great resources to perform your own upgrade.

Now, I'm not too much of a prude, but when you've been using the best of open source or Lotus Notes v8 (or even v7 or v6), Outlook 2003 seems to be a bit dated.

...Here are two reasons why rules don't work - you need to set the rule up before you send the email and in order for the rule to work, you have to trigger on something that is common in all the emails. ugh. Continue reading →

After a bit of research I found out that people were using Safari as opposed to my favorite browser Firefox. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, but I simply changed my browser to Safari to access those services. Continue reading →

Again, this is abstracted from superdug's post in the Boxee forums : The problem: You go to watch a netflix instant movie, the netflix app loads, it tests your video, you get buffered data, and then an 8152 DRM error shows up. First you'll need kext helper: http://cheetha.net/ Now you need some kext's: smbios.zip AppleSMBIOS.zip IONetworkingFamily.zip AppleSMBIOSEnabler.zip You'll need to have an account on insanelymac.com in order to download the files Original thread here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/ind...ic=134517&st=0 Drag all 4 kexts onto kexthelperb7 type in your password, and choose easy install. Continue reading →
