Utilities
Here is a list of the current utilities/applications I use on a day to day basis broken down by platform. I’ll add links later.
Cross-Platform:
Firefox with the following Add-ons:
Adblock Plus – Ad blocker
Firebug – Essential tool for any web developer. Tag line: “Web Development Evolved” Get it. Don’t walk, run!
Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer – allows me to sync all my bookmarks across-platforms and on many machines.
Permit Cookies – I turn off cookie acceptance by default. I use this handy add-on to permit cookies to come onto my system.
Pidgin – multi-protocol chat client
VMWare – Server/computer virtualization
VirtualBox – Open Source equivalent to VMWare
Windows:
Launchy – Application launcher
SysInternal Tools – Love them!!
MWSnap – smart screen capture utility
Microsoft Live Writer – probably the best blogging editor around.
Adobe Master Suite CS3 – Everything a frustrated graphic artist/web developer/amateur photog would ever need
Adobe LightRoom – great tool for managing your digital photos
Filezilla – great FTP program
pUTTY – great SSH program
MS Visual Studio (.NET at times)
VbsEdit – great little script editor when I don’t need to fire up the monster app MSVS. It comes with a ton of prebuilt scripts that save a lot of time.
ExeScript – take those scripts written in VbsEdit and make them .exe’s.
PeerGuardian 2 – block snooping IP addresses – a MUST HAVE!
Azureus – Torrent client with neat catalog of stuff to download
UltraMon – Multiple monitor control application – must have if you have more than one active monitor. No longer in us, but highly recommended.
Mac OS X:
Quick Silver – Application launcher
Adobe Master Suite CS3 – yeah.. I know. It’s worth it.
Adobe LightRoom – yeah.. I know. It’s worth it. Testing Aperture 2.0.
Cyberduck – FTP program
VMWare Fusion – Virtual Machine software. Seems a step and half ahead of Parallels.
Ubuntu:
Bibble Pro – akin to Adobe LightRoom. Awesome product. Not as polished as Adobe’s offerings, but very powerful.
GNOME-DO – a launching program for GNOME
Online:
Yugma – free online conference/screen sharing site. Up to 10 people and complementary conference call number — free!!
Evernote – free during Beta cross-platform/browser software to allow the capturing of webclips/information online. Very useful so far.
